How to play this five-letter word game

Guess a hidden five-letter word in six attempts. Each completed guess gives you colour clues to refine the next one, so every turn should either test a useful letter or narrow down its position.

Read the board before the next guess

A green tile means the letter is in the word and in the right position. Yellow means the letter occurs in the answer but belongs elsewhere. Grey means the letter is not used in that answer. Repeated letters need care: a colour only confirms as many copies as the answer contains.

A practical opening

Begin with a valid word containing several different, common letters. Once you have a green or yellow clue, use it deliberately instead of entering an unrelated word. The English game accepts valid five-letter English forms, excluding proper names; the answer itself is a regular word from the game list.

Example

If S is green in the first position and A is yellow in the second, keep S at the start and try A in another slot. A second A may still matter, so choose a follow-up word that can test that possibility.
